Theresa Louw – Honouring a Lifetime of Service to South African Wine Laboratories
For more than four decades, Theresa Louw has dedicated her career to strengthening the scientific foundations of the South African wine industry through analytical excellence, quality assurance, mentorship and servant leadership. Her contribution extends far beyond the success of her own laboratory. Through her work with the South African Wine Laboratories Association (SAWLA), she has helped build a culture of collaboration, technical excellence and continuous improvement that has benefited wine laboratories across the country.
Theresa began her career at KWV, where she developed a strong foundation in wine chemistry, quality control and laboratory management under the guidance of respected industry leaders Gary Baumgarten and the late Herman Kirschbaum. Their commitment to scientific integrity, high standards and the generous sharing of knowledge shaped her own professional philosophy—one she has carried throughout her career.
In 2003, Theresa co-founded Wynland Analytical Laboratory in Wellington. Under her leadership, the SANAS-accredited laboratory has become one of South Africa’s leading independent analytical laboratories, serving the wine, fruit juice and olive oil industries. Wynland Analytical’s commitment to quality has been recognised with the SAWLA Laboratory of the Year Award on six occasions (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2025), reflecting not only technical excellence but also a culture of continuous improvement and uncompromising scientific standards.
While these achievements are significant, Theresa considers her greatest contribution to be her service to the broader wine industry.
She has always believed that the strength of South African wine lies in strong laboratories working together rather than competing against one another. Throughout her career, she has championed the sharing of knowledge, believing that scientific excellence grows through collaboration, mentorship and mutual respect. This philosophy has guided every aspect of her involvement in SAWLA.
From 2005 to 2018, Theresa served on the SAWLA Executive Committee, including as Chairperson from 2016 to 2017. During this time, she helped modernise the Association by contributing to the development of its website and introducing electronic reporting for inter-laboratory proficiency testing, improving communication, efficiency and the management of proficiency testing across participating laboratories. She also actively promoted skills development by creating opportunities for laboratory personnel to learn, grow and participate more fully in the profession.
Her passion for education has remained a defining characteristic throughout her career. Theresa has presented several workshops for SAWLA and other industry forums. Her presentations, have encouraged laboratories to understand analytical variation, improve quality systems and adopt best practices. In 2007, she represented South African wine laboratories during a technical study visit to South Australia, benchmarking local analytical practices against international standards and bringing valuable knowledge back to the industry.
Beyond formal leadership roles, Theresa has quietly mentored countless laboratory analysts, young scientists and colleagues. Many know her not only for her technical expertise, but for her willingness to answer questions, solve problems and freely share her knowledge. She firmly believes that scientific knowledge should never be guarded, but shared generously to strengthen the industry as a whole.
Those who have worked with Theresa often describe her leadership as humble, approachable and service-driven. She has never regarded success as an individual achievement, but as the result of strong mentors, dedicated colleagues and committed teams working together towards a common purpose. She readily acknowledges the influence of Gary Baumgarten and Herman Kirschbaum, whose example inspired her own commitment to excellence, as well as her long-standing business partner, Marietta Burger, and the dedicated Wynland Analytical team, whose loyalty and professionalism have been central to the laboratory’s success.
Although Theresa has also earned national recognition for her expertise in extra virgin olive oil quality assurance and sensory evaluation, her enduring legacy remains her contribution to the South African wine industry. Through scientific integrity, quality assurance, mentorship and her commitment to raising laboratory standards, she has helped strengthen the analytical systems that underpin the quality, authenticity and international reputation of South African wine.
In recognition of this lifetime of service, Theresa received the South African Society for Enology and Viticulture (SASEV) Honorary Award in 2025. The award is one of the industry’s highest honours and recognises her exceptional contribution to the Association, SAWLA, laboratory science and the South African wine industry.
Perhaps what best defines Theresa’s career is not the awards she has received, but the values by which she has lived. She boldly confesses her belief in God’s plan and guidance in her life She believes that excellence is built on integrity, that leadership is expressed through service, and that the greatest legacy any professional can leave is to equip others to succeed. For more than forty years, she has quietly lived those values, leaving an enduring impact on South African wine laboratories and on the people whose lives and careers she has helped shape.
