Three-Way Triumph: A Historic SAWLA Lab of the Year Result in 2025
The annual South African Wine Laboratory Association year-end function and AGM, held on 14 November 2025 at the renowned Spice Route Destination, delivered an unforgettable celebration of excellence in wine analysis. As always, the highlight of the day was the much anticipated SAWLA Lab of the Year Awards, recognising the top performing laboratories in the SAWLA interlaboratory scheme.
In a truly remarkable and unprecedented outcome, not one, not two but three laboratories shared the prestigious SAWLA Lab of the Year title for 2025. Robertson Winery, Perdeberg Group, and Wynland Analytical Laboratory each achieved an outstanding total score of 322 points, jointly claiming top honours.
Both Robertson Winery and Wynland Analytical Laboratory are no strangers to the winner’s circle, having consistently ranked among the top laboratories over the years. However, this year’s standout story belongs to the Perdeberg Group, whose rise to first place marks an extraordinary achievement. After finishing in 10th position in 2024, their leap to the top in 2025 underscores a commitment to continuous improvement and analytical excellence.
This rare three-way tie at the top is a powerful reflection of the exceptionally high standards maintained by SAWLA member laboratories. It highlights the increasing levels of accuracy and precision in wine analysis, an advancement that benefits not only individual producers but the South African wine industry as a whole.
Close behind the leaders, Robertson Cooperative Winery secured second place with an impressive 317 points. Third place was jointly awarded to Namaqua Wines (Vredendal Wine Cellar) and Wine Analytical Services, both achieving a total of 316 points.
The 2025 results serve as a testament to the dedication, technical expertise, and collaborative spirit that define the SAWLA community. As standards continue to rise, so too does the global reputation of South African wine, built on a foundation of scientific excellence and integrity.
